Could you please clarify which aspect of this is the bug? I see that there is a text-overflow: ellipsis on the <a> element, and a tooltip shows up when text doesn't fit. This seems like desirable behavior.

I made a custom tooltip for the link (to show the full text of truncated text when the user hovers) but Safari (unlike Chrome canary) shows both my custom tooltip and the native browser title tooltip (you need to hover for a bit longer to see that one)

The link doesn’t even have a title and yet is showing the browser native tooltip on hover. Surely that is a bug?

> Safari (unlike Chrome canary) shows both my custom tooltip and the native browser title tooltip I now understand what motivated the report. I initially tested with an older Safari version, where the custom tooltip didn't show up. However, I don't see any reason to agree that this is a WebKit bug, showing a tooltip for truncated text seems natural and user friendly. Nothing says that a browser cannot show tooltips for anything but title. Duping to bug 114304 that tracks adding a way to disable this behavior. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 114304 ***

Thanks for the response. I agree that it’s useful behaviour, but native browser tooltips don’t look great. We definitely need a way to turn off this behaviour for custom tooltips.
