We should consider back porting https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/blink/+/5b1ed85dbdb7d4ed647231673eaea611311837a5 Properly handle 'span' position during layout This change plumbs the final bits so that we now recognize 'span' positions and resolve them accordingly. Left out of this change is the interaction with the auto-placement algorithm which is still unresolved in the specification (see issue 234768).
