Visit
http://asb.co.nz/
. Mouse over the "Join ASB" navigation menu on the left-hand side of the page. Note that the menu displays in the correct place. Move the mouse down to "Ways to Bank". The menu now displays at the top of the screen.

I have just noticed that if you follow the steps I described while the page is still loading, the menus all display in the correct location. When the page finishes loading, the menus for items below "Ways to Bank" once again display at the top of the page.

I've had a closer look at the code in this page, and it looks as though it's "fixing" its menus for Internet Explorer via JS. It does this "fix" for non-Firefox browsers, which causes Safari to break. It's not particularly clear what the "fix" intends to accomplish, so I can't tell if the fix causing the menus to break in Safari is a bug but I see the same behaviour from Firefox if I change it's User Agent string to match Safaris. I'll drop the webmaster of ASB Bank an email and ask if they can fix this problem.

I guess ASB didn't care to fix this last time. I have submitted a request to fix this through the ASB website. The fix on their part is trivial - the minimal change is to just change the User Agent String test from "Firefox" to "Gecko" and it will work with Safari.

This is the reply I got from ASB: "Thank you for your email regarding the ASB website. I have forwarded your feed back on the website to the ASB Online Team for their reference and attention. I noticed that you have tested this out on a variety of browsers, thank you, I think that most of our customers use Internet Explorer and Firefox as a preferred browser." Incredible. Who cares about standards, right?

It seems that ASB have done a complete refresh of their website and this issue no longer occurs. I have taken a quick look at all javascript loaded by the home page and I cannot see any browser sniffing for a "firefox" user agent. I think this defect can be closed.

I can confirm the bug is indeed fixed.
