Sorting currently becomes a bottleneck on a page like this with ~500 layers: http://css-class.com/test/css/3/transform-color-cube3.htm

A CS prof friend is interested in looking at this and the correctness issues as a research collaboration with Google. (He gets funding we get code!) So unless it's a high priority thing we should let that see where it goes?
