Summary On a 10.5.8 system without Bitstream Vera Sans, pages render incorrectly
Laurent Bossavit
Reported 2011-02-11 15:09:45 PST
I'm using Chrome (recently switched from FireFox) on a Mac with OSX 10.5.8. Prior to noticing and investigating this bug I didn't have the font "Bitstream Vera Sans" installed. Any page with a stylesheet referencing Bistream Vera Sans rendered incorrectly: after briefly flashing correct page contents most of the page would be washed out with its background color, and the scroll bars would indicate incorrect extents for the page. (This even though the CSS for these pages specified alternates for Vera Sans.) Scrolling the page to its ends results in even weirder behaviour, see attachment. Installing Bitstream Vera Sans and rebooting corrects the issue, an acceptable workaround, but the behaviour should be to fall back to default fonts and degrade gracefully. Repro'd under Safari 4.

Safari 4 is very old. What about the most recent version of Safari 5?

(In reply to comment #2) > Safari 4 is very old. What about the most recent version of Safari 5? My bad, I meant the latest Safari, i.e. 5. I haven't been using it much for a while, only recently to confirm that the bug's origin was in Webkit.

Can you still produce a minimal reproduction?

(In reply to comment #4) > Can you still produce a minimal reproduction? What do you mean by "minimal"? More to the point, is the information given in this bug report sufficient for someone else to repro this bug, or is this staying "unconfirmed" because you (or anyone else) tried to repro based on the info I gave and was unable to repro? No, I don't at this moment intend to do any more investigation of this bug than I already have.

Without a minimal test case we can't reproduce it. This was also on a nightly build and font rendering has changed considerably since this was logged. This should be closed..
