Jpeg-XR is a high performance Jpeg alternative. It was made an ISO standard last year by JPEG group and supports some nice features such as better compression, support for high bit depths, alpha channels and lossless.
For anybody interested in adding this feature, Microsoft have recently released a BSD licenced, optimised open source library for Jpeg-XR: https://jxrlib.codeplex.com/ Blog post: http://hdview.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/jpegxr-photoshop-plugin-and-source-code/
I'm internested in bringing jpeg-xr support to webkit & chromium. Was there any objection regarding it before?
O.K I'd like to start adding jpeg-xr support to webkit. But the support will be decided by each ports though, I want to bring it to gtk & efl port first. Relevant discussion is here. https://lists.webkit.org/pipermail/webkit-dev/2015-March/027325.html
