Description Robert Snyder 2010-06-18 08:54:04 PDT
We run the management tool for WebObjects, called JavaMonitor, on port 6666. As of the release of Safari 5, we now unable to access this site. Searches of this site and the web indicate that this was a bug in the version of WebKit Safari used when Apple release OS X 10..4.11. Here are links to reports at that time. https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14100 https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14538 https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11564

Forcing users to add a suspicious port to a list of user accepted ports would be fine, but there is way to override this restriction of nonstandard ports.

The error we are getting is:

Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “http://mitwc69.ce.psu.edu:6666/”. The error is: “Not allowed to use restricted network port” (WebKitErrorDomain:103) Please choose Safari > Report Bugs to Apple, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

Yes, Safari 5's WebKit shipped with port blocking for common IRC ports due to a flood of highly publicized IRC attacks originating from web browsers

See http://trac.webkit.org/changeset/56489

Workaround? Use a port lower than 6665 or higher than 6669
