In trying to get bug 240694 finally passing tests so it can land, I wrote some unit tests for Git.branches_for. In doing so, I found a bunch of our mocks are far from matching git — to a sufficient extent that it seems worthwhile landing these fixes separately, so it's obvious what's actually changing with rewriting `branches_for`.
