Description George Stamatis 2009-09-04 20:07:39 PDT
When I launch Safari i'm able to play youtube video and other videos.
When I launch WebKit r48037 i'm not able to play Youtube videos.

Anything wrong ?
Comment 1 Alexey Proskuryakov 2009-09-08 11:58:23 PDT
I cannot reproduce this problem on a Mac Pro (64-bit) running Mac OS X 10.6 with r48139 nightly.
Comment 2 George Stamatis 2009-09-09 05:50:51 PDT
I read on Apple discussions board's that many users are having problems with youtube and other flash videos and showave videos.
Therefore it seems to be a flash/shockwave problem.
Comment 3 Daniel Bates 2009-11-27 20:40:22 PST
Is this still an issue?
Comment 4 Joe Z 2010-03-01 12:34:59 PST
Same issue with youtube and other flash videos on webkit r55354. No video appears, even though they work in Firefox and stable Safari 4.

Macbook 3,1
2.2 gHz intel duo
4 gb RAM
GMAX3100 video card

Joe,

Can you provide an example URL that demonstrates the issue? Moreover, what version of Flash do you have installed? (On a Mac, see Help->Installed Plug-ins).

Joe,

Can you try the following:

1) Quit Safari and/or any WebKit nightly that you currently have open.
2) Move the Safari and WebKit preference files (com.apple.Safari.plist, and org.webkit.nightly.WebKit.plist) from your ~/Library/Preferences to some other folder, say the Desktop.
3) Open Safari/WebKit Nightly.
4) Visit a web site with flash that failed for you.

Note, Safari and the WebKit nighties will re-generate these files.

If this resolves the issue, can you please post your preference files to the bug?

Otherwise, to restore your old preference files, quit Safari and/or WebKit nightly and move those files back into ~/Library/Preferences (replacing any existing files). Then open Safari and/or WebKit nightly.

When I launched webkit this morning to find the URL's, the videos worked. I didn't update webkit but my com.apple.safari.plist and org.webkit.nightly.webkit.plist indicate that they were modified at 8:00 this morning, the same time that I launched webkit. I didn't touch the files, so webkit must have changed them on its own.

If I find future bugs, I assume I should back up these plist files while the bug is occurring?

Yesterday, though, I was unable to launch any youtube videos, this flash video: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/225c3c41dd/attack-cardio-with-vinnie-jones , or a flash game on newgrounds. Seems like webkit couldn't find the flash plugin at all.

Yes. I'm not sure how useful these plist files will be, but the more information you can provide the better since neither I nor Alexey have been able to reproduce this issue. Also, provide any other information and/or attachments. For instance, a screen shot of the page when it happens. I mean, do you see a missing plugin icon? or is the area that would have contained the flash element empty? Maybe some kind of error message was written to the system log file /var/log/system.log (use the Console application in /Applications/Utilities to view the log files).

The video loads and plays for me.

Crash of webkit plugin host, possibly associated with failure to display flash content
Comment 10 Joe Z 2010-03-02 10:24:04 PST

I'm looking at the backed up system.log files (system.log.0.bz2) and on march
1st the following error was written to the console 14 times (at different times
of the day):

Mar  1 15:55:57 MacBook com.apple.WebKit.PluginAgent[59664]: Debugger() was
called!

I've also attached a .crash file of the webkit plugin host, that was written on
2-27-10. Not sure how long this bug goes back, since I don't view flash videos
every day, but it may be realated.

There was no missing plugin symbol, the page casually finished loading, leaving
a space for the video, but not displaying any of the playback buttons or
border. Just whatever the background color was.

That's normal, the Flash plugin logs these messages all the time. The crash looks alarming though.
Comment 12 Alexey Proskuryakov 2010-03-16 15:08:02 PDT
The crash is not in WebKit though, so the best thing to do for an unreproducible issue like this is to just submit it to Apple via a problem report dialog that appears automatically.

I'm confused by the comments in the bug. Does it still occur to anyone? Can it be closed?
Comment 13 George Stamatis 2010-03-17 07:46:40 PDT
I just submitted this bug to Apple Bug reporter and Bug ID is # 7763102.

Attempted to play embedded YouTube, the video would begin and then reset after 3-6 seconds. Went to the actually YouTube video and saw exactly the same thing.

Version 5.1.2 (7534.52.7, r102536)

Flash Version: 11.1.102.55 just installed

Video worked fine in Chrome v 15.0.874.121

NPAPI and Webkit Plugins are not supported any more. Can this be marked as "RESOLVED WONTFIX"? Thanks!

Further Youtube has now been changed to support HTML5 <video> element.

Unless, if this is related to some other system related crash then please ignore my comment. Thanks!

YouTube videos are playing fine these days.
