I'm not quite sure how to fix this. I'm sure it has something to do with the text node being in the shadow tree, and recalcstyle never dropping down into the shadow tree. CC'ing mitz and hyatt.

dan and i discovered that this is also broken for other text field pseudo-elements- but not for pseudo-elements in other controls like the upload control and the slider.

Don't know since when, but it's fixed in r46809.
