Only being able to search with google is very limiting. Other browsers have the ability to easily select different search engines and specify your own, so people can for example use ebay search, scroogle instead of google, and wikipedia directly.

The search box is a feature of Safari, the browser, not WebKit, the engine. Feature requests for Safari should be filed at <https://bugreport.apple.com/>.
