When a user types and executes a search query from the Safari Smart Search Field, the query is passed on to the search engine the user has defined in Safari preferences. The user interaction however is not recorded in resource load statistics toward the resulting search engine domain of their choice. Given that performing a query through the Smart Search Field demonstrates the user’s intent to interact with the search engine, it seems appropriate for a user interaction to be recorded against the top privately controlled domain of the target search engine at the time of the query.

Interactions with Safari UI are outside the scope of the WebKit project. Your best option is to communicate through Apple Developer Relations referencing the Radar generated by this bug report (<rdar://problem/33971314>). That said, we do not assign user interaction credit for activity taking place outside the scope of the browser page by design. Consequently, the feature currently works as designed.
