If, in the COMDAT picking the zero-initialized versions would just fail early at runtime, right? If so then it'll be easy to catch if ever it starts failing.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is the case. Also, I fixed the typo in this sentence locally: "pick actual specialization" => "pick the actual specialization"
