Running PowerMac G4 OS X 10.4.10, Safari Version 3.0.3 (522.12.1). Old web inspector, black transparent floating, works with both Saft version 9.0.0b5 and Safari Extender version 1.6.6 safari plug-ins. Downloaded latest nightly build 8/20/07. Installed new WebKit Web Inspector. Webkit WI opens Safari and WI appears to work fine although the functionality of Safari Extender plug-in disappears. Saft appears to work fine. Close Safari and reopen. Safari Extender plug-in functionality returns and works fine AND the old web inspector is back. Close safari, reinstall WebKit WI. Safari Extender functionality goes away and Web Inspector works fine.

First off, extensions like Saft and Safari Extender are *completely unsupported* and are more than likely the cause of the problem you're having, which, honestly, I'm not even sure what that is. Secondly, you don't "install" the Web Inspector. The Web Inspector is available through the nightly builds and in Safari 3 Beta. The only way it can be "installed" is if you install Safari 3 Beta, which still has the older, HUD-style Inspector. The newer Inspector is only available in the nightly builds. Running a WebKit nightly doesn't install anything or make any changes to your system, so the next time you start Safari, it starts with whatever version is installed on your system (ie: Safari 2.0.4 or Safari 3 Beta). You'll have to use the gold-rimmed, WebKit icon every time if you want to get the various improvements that have been made since an official Safari release. Remove Saft, Safari Extender and any other Safari extensions from your system and see if you still have problems. A list of the locations where extensions live is available at <
