Unfortunately, archive.org did not archive the image referenced by the test case, contain-cover.png, and bugzilla77 neither uploaded it to this bug nor providing details about the image. Using the test case and a 16:9 solid color image for contain-cover.png I see a solid color rectangle in Safari Version 9.1.3 (11601.7.8) (as expected). With a 1:1 solid color image, I see red lines for the "background-size: contain" case as expected. Both of these results match the results seen in Firefox for Mac 48.0.1 and Chrome for Mac 53.0.2785.89 beta (64-bit). Additional remarks: I assume that contain-cover.png was a grey rectangle with a 16:9 aspect ratio such that the expected result of the test case is two solid grey rectangles (stacked vertically). But Chrome 27 and Safari at the time the bug was filed (07/04/2013) showed at least one rectangle with red lines surrounding it, maybe there was a bug with "background-size: contain"?
