Summary
start time degrades as history grows

After I used safari for a while, i noticed that there is a long delay (5+ seconds) after the first Safari window opens and before the home page loads. At this time if I click on the windows, it becomes 'hung'. After some experimentation, I found that if i clear the history (Edit-> Reset Safari -> C;ear History only), the startup delay goes away until the history builds up again. I am on WinXp sp3 on Intel Core Duo 2ghz with 3GB of RAM. Needless to say this is a pretty nasty usability issue.

How many history items do you have when you experience the 5+ second hang? The easiest way to check this is to search for "." in the search field in the Bookmarks view, scoped to the History collection.

I'll check next time it gets to that point. I think i had to reset history after about 1.5-2 weeks since last reset.
