This mirrors this issue on the html spec: https://github.com/whatwg/html/issues/9379 People seem open to this and I think it would be an improvement, so I'm trying to get implementer interest for this. I am also currently implementing this in both Firefox and Chromium and have written the updated specs and new web platform tests for that.
