Hello all! I'm not a programmer. But wanted to tell you I love Safari and want it to work well. It does fine until it hangs up everythung with mad crazy disk activity. I have scoured the net for solutions. But to no avail, found nothing to help me. I'll try to tell you clearly what happens to me. During each surfing session, shortly after the browser is opened and running, say anywhere from 5 - 10 minutes after surfing around, Safari starts having unexplained disk activity that hangs up and slows down my entire computer system. I have a G4/867DP-MDD with 1 gig of ram. The boot drive is small at 30 gigs with 10 gigs free, OS-X 10.4.8 with nightly build from 2.28.2007. The regual Safari was worse! And today's build was not much better. I am digging the 2.28.2007 build. Wayyy Cool! The computer is working fine otherwise. When it hangs, I open up activity monitor and double click Safari and see that first off mdimport, mds, kernel task and mds are very active. Other times not so much. What I am concerned about is that it happens everytime I open the browser. It also seems as though it's parsing bookmarks. I have at least a thousand, and sometime see the names scrolling by. See if there's anything in the text that can say what's going on? Let me know what else to look out for in getting to the bottom of solving this issue. Thank you all! mdimport and mds are the components behind Spotlight, which is not part of WebKit. If their resource utilisation is impacting the performance of your system you should file a bug report with Apple at <http://bugreporter.apple.com/>. I'm closing this bug as invalid as it seems very unlikely to be specific to WebKit based on your description.
My two cents: Thanks for the bug report, Donnie! I believe mdimport and mds are Spotlight background processes that index your hard drive. I don't believe they have anything to do with Safari or its performance, though.
