I get an identical error using Safari or iCab. However, I have no difficulty when I use Camino 2.1.2 or Chromium.

I just logged into live.com and hotmail using Safari 6.0.1 and it worked just fine.

Did you try contacting Microsoft? Perhaps this was a temporary technical difficulty indeed.

Does not work with Safari 5.1.7 and OSX 10.6.8.

Did not bother to contact Microsoft as the "temporary technical difficulty" exists only for Safari (5.1.7 in my case), Webkit, and iCab, but Camino and Chromium tested as concurrently as possible have no problems logging in.

Pretty sure, this would've been fixed since 2012.
So I am going to mark this as "RESOLVED WONTFIX" (never got confirmed).
