When starting up the WebKit nightly build, the user may be prompted to install an update. If the update is done, "Reopen All Windows From Last Session" gets reset and the user cannot get back to the state of the browser session before the update was applied.

I guess there's a situation where the previous session state has been read in and removed, but then the new "current" session state has not yet been written out...? But that's supposed to happen during a normal quit. Does the WebKit nightly updated kill the browser instead?

FWIW: last_session info is lost when the update is applied from the user account. But quitting WebKit in the user account and doing the update in the admin account leaves the last_session info in place on the user account.
