the nightly tarball at http://nightly.webkit.org/files/WebKit-SVN-source.tar.bz2 is built with what appears to be an *old* svn. I downloaded the version of cygwin linked to from the apple win build instructions (1.7.4) and had to upgrade the repo. between the time taken to download the tarball, uncompress the tarball, and then upgrade the repo, I'm pretty sure I could've just done a straight checkout twice :)

I'm not sure who maintains the tarball. Perhaps we just need to retire it at this point.

Mark Rowe has historically maintained nightly.webkit.org. Presumably he would know who to talk to regarding the tarball, or perhaps he can update it himself. :)

The problem here is that if it's packaged using a newer version of SVN then older clients can't use it at all.

True.
I'm not sure which version you're building it with, but the site says that the oldest supported version is 1.4, which was released in 2007. Perhaps it makes more sense to build the tarball with a newer version that won't have this issue (I'm not sure how new that needs to be, but presumably that's either 1.6.x, released in 2009, or 1.7.x, released in 11/2011), and give older users the out of still doing a full-checkout?

Subversion 1.7 introduced a new working copy format while dropping support for the previous working copy format. An explicit upgrade step is needed in order for a Subversion 1.7 client to use a working copy in the previous format (e.g., one that was created using any earlier version of Subversion). There is no supported way to downgrade the Subversion 1.7 working copy format for older Subversion clients. Creating the tarball with a newer version of Subversion would make it useless for anyone with Subversion 1.6. I don't think there's any easy solution for this at present.

I see. I agree that it would be too early to drop 1.6. Thanks!
