When you use ρ it should render as U+03C1
However when you use ρ with "font-family: serif;" it renders as U+03F1.
This is especially annoying in the context of Math related subjects.

This is a bug in the Times font apparently, using Times New Roman appears to fix it.

Yes, that's what this font has for U+03C1. I don't know how much of a bug this is (other than the fact that every other font on the system matches the expectation), but please file this via <http://bugreport.apple.com>.
