You can hit the web inspector shortcut to show the inspector, but if it's open, hitting it again should hide it, but you have to either click the x or go via the menu bar.

Actually, you can't close it via menu bar. You need to use the mouse and click the x.

alt-command-i does show and hide the inspector for me as mentioned. Closing.
