This started about 4 - 6 weeks ago. Also occurs with latest Apple version of Safari.
Browser starts OK, then, after 2 to 5 or so attempts to go to a new web site, the program hangs, CPU usage goes way up and the app becomes totally non-responsive. I have to force quit.
I get the same behavior also using the latest version of Tiger, too, on the same computer, but with a different start-up disk.
Firefox always seems to work fine, also Camino.

Can you please take a sample of what it is doing when this happens? Open Activity Monitor, select WebKit from the list of applications, and when it hangs click View -> Sample Process. Attach the output that it generates to this bug report.
