Description Eric Portis 2021-07-13 13:48:08 PDT
Playing the following video in Safari on macOS 11+ and iOS 14+, it has audible crackling/popping:

In Chrome, or on earlier macOS/iOS versions, it does not.

I think this is the same issue reported by many people here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252705782?page=2, but I couldn't find an open WebKit issue about it. I will also submit via Feedback Assistant, and post the ID# here.

Is there anything anyone can share about the root cause, or possible workarounds?

I cannot reproduce this on an M1 Mac with macOS 11.5 beta.

Could you please clarify if you can only reproduce in Safari, or in QuickTime Player too?

I can reproduce in:

Big Sur 11.3 running on a 2017 13" Intel MacBook Pro
- Safari 14.1 on macOS
- Safari Technology Preview 127
- Quicktime Player 10.5

iOS 14.6 running on an iPhone 12 mini
- Mobile Safari 14.1.1
- opening the video in the Files app

Thank you. Given that this reproduces outside WebKit, this must be an issue in underlying system frameworks below us.

Thank you for the report! This will continue to be investigated by Apple.
