Unable to use google gears at docs.google.com, and attempting to re-install seems to fail also. Previous builds did not have this issue.

This sounds much more likely to be a Google Gears issue than a WebKit issue, especially given the way in which it attempts to hook itself into Safari. You should file a bug report against Gears instead. Feel free to reopen this if there is some evidence that WebKit is at fault.
