We don't recognize the font as italic, but we should. We erroneously apply synthetic bold. You can see this on the "italic" section of https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_Fonts/Variable_Fonts_Guide

That example has "font-style: italic" set on the font from https://mdn.github.io/css-examples/variable-fonts/fonts/jost-VF.woff2
