while composing an email or clicking send in Gmail webkit crashes. Spotlight is rebuilding my database at the time. mbp /2GB RAM not running other apps at the time.

Can you please provide a crash log? <http://webkit.org/quality/crashlogs.html>. It seems unlikely that Spotlight indexing the drive is related to the crash at all.
