a) Yes, it's now using CSS transitions exclusively.
b) I haven't tested iOS 11 (only you have :) ), but on iOS 10.3, it is still flickering after a few times opening articles.

Side node: looks like you have an SVG image with three animating circles that is making this content continually busy.

But that SVG image is only visible when the loading class is on the element. Or are you seeing it busy even without the spinner visible?
