It'd be great if this could be done in the compositor, so animating clip-path is super-smooth.

This seems to be very smooth actually. Can't see an issue with http://output.jsbin.com/ticeve/quiet?

That said, if you have a better example that is slow in WebKit/Safar, please open a new issue and mark it blocked by this bug.
