For compatibility reasons to SVG and to support the general harmonization process with bug 90738, it looks reasonable to support luminance masks as well. This is currently described by the proposal for CSS Masking [1]. The old SVG masking code used to work with CI to transform a luminance mask to an alpha mask [2].
