Intentionally so. In Firefox images must be self contained so &lt;image&gt; elements within SVGImage documents would need to be data URLs. See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=628747</thetext>

    <thetext>Worth noting that WebKit does not work with data URLs or linked images. IE9+ and Firefox both work with data URLs and even IE9+ supports linked images.</thetext>
