I repoduced the 'bug' in the file mentioned. Safari 416.12 doesn't display anything at all while FireFox 1.0.7 and Opera 9.0Beta display the red square. The difference is that Safari also changes the visibility of the the child when its parents visibility is changed. The other browsers don't. The workaround is easy - but it's work... I'm not sure if this is a bug in Safari or FireFox. If it is then let me know. I'll post it there.
